More than 70 million people a month depend on the benefits they receive from the Social Security Administration to support themselves. Whether you receive benefits through Supplemental Security Income or SSI, Social Security Disability Insurance or SSDI, or Social Security retirement, knowing when the money will be processed and deposited to your bank account is important.

Because it has so many payments to process each month, Social Security staggers the payment schedule based on your date of birth and other factors. The information in this article will help you to plan and budget by explaining how payments are processed, so you have the ability to anticipate when your benefits will be deposited into your account and available to you.

When will my Social Security disability benefit be processed each month?

Your birth date determines the day of the month on which your Social Security retirement or SSDI benefits payment will be processed and deposited to your bank account or added to your Direct Express debit card and Zintego. If you were born during the first 10 days of the month, then your Social Security disability payments will process on the second Wednesday of the month.

If your date of birth is on the 11th day of the month through to the 20th day, Social Security processes payments for a deposit on the third Wednesday of the month. Finally, if your date of birth falls on the 21st through the 31st day of a month, you can expect the funds to be sent to your bank or added to your debit card on the fourth Wednesday of the month. If you began receiving SSDI or Social Security retirement benefits before May 1997, those payments are processed on the third day of the month regardless of the day of the week that you were born.

Family benefits to people who qualify for disability benefits through the earnings record of a retired or disabled family member are processed according to the date of birth of the eligible worker. It does go by the date of birth of the person receiving family benefits.

The date of birth method that Social Security uses to determine the day of the month on which it processes your payment does not apply to benefit payments through the SSI program. If you are on SSI, your payment is processed on the first of the month regardless of your date of birth. However, if the first of the month is on a weekend or a federal holiday, the payment is processed on the Friday before the weekend or on the weekday immediately preceding the federal holiday.

Many people qualify for benefits through both the SSI and SSDI programs, which does not affect the process of SSI payments on the first day of the month. It does, however, change the processing of your SSDI payment to the third of the month no matter what day of the month you were born on.

One last thing to keep in mind about your monthly Social Security disability benefit through SSDI and retirement benefits is that payments are not processed and paid in the month in which they are due. In other words, the payment owed to you for September 2022 will not be processed and paid until October 2022.
