Dilution Formula

Table of Contents

Dilution is the process where the concentration of a solution is reduced significantly. It can be done quickly with the help of a solvent that is added to the solution and helps to decrease the number of moles per liter considerably.

So, dilution is the process when you have a solution of particular concentration and you are adding more solvent to decrease its concentration. As soon as you start adding solvent, the volume of whole solutions will start increasing and the dilution of a solution can be measured with the following formula as mentioned below –

\[\ M1 \times V1 = M2 \times V2 \]

Where M1 is the concentration of concentrated solution and V1 is the volume of concentrated solution. M2 is the concentration of dilute solution and V2 is the volume of dilute solution.

There are a plenty of techniques to showcase the concentration and volume of a concentrated solution. And the formula we have given is the most preferable and easy solution that is used frequently by chemists.

There are two different type of dilutions in Chemistry. These are step dilution and the serial dilution. If the dilution factor is measured greater than the final volume needed then then more dilutions may be required in this case.

On the other hand, serial dilution is the succession of serial dilution where dilution material from previous step is taken to make the subsequent dilution. There are different formulas too for each type of dilution and you just have to plugin values in the formula to calculate the final result.
