What is Boron Phosphate?

Boron Phosphate is an inorganic salt that is used as a catalyst in organic synthesis process in chemical industries and it can be used for the research of material science too. The chemical formula for the compound is written as BPO4 and its molecular weight is written as the 105.78 g mol-1.

The natural occurrence of this compound is quite common and it is found as natural deposits too. The compound is prepared by reacting boron and phosphoric acid together which is the common source of boron. The compound has a crystalline structure and it is prepared when heated between 80 to 1200-degree Celsius temperatures.

H3BO3 + H3PO4 → BPO4 + 3 H2O

When we look at the physical properties of the compound then this is an amorphous white solid crystalline solid with a density of 2.52 g mL-1 approx. The compound is infusible, so it does not have any melting point. However, the solid evaporates above 1450 degree Celsius and it is taken highly soluble in water.

It is used as a catalyst too in organic reactions. This compound has a mineral behavior that is largely used for producing ceramics and other thermo-resistant materials. It is a good catalyst for reactions like dehydration, isomerization, animation, or pyrolysis etc. it can also be used a phosphating agent for some exchange reactions to obtain metal phosphates of Mg, Ca, or Zn etc. it is used as a major component in LED manufacturing.
